Rusty Pickel is a VFL (Vol for Life) He has always enjoyed supporting UT athletics. This infatuation swayed his decision on which university to choose to further his education after high school. While at the University of Tennessee, Rusty was diagnosed with Leukemia. He was forced to take a couple of years off from school during his 3-1/2 yrs of treatment. In January of 2003, he finished his treatment and continued his studies. He graduated from UTK in 2005 with a bachelors degree in geography and economics. The next 4 years were spent working for the family business while searching for a job in natural resources, education or general business. During this job search, he realized that his true God given talents would be better used by serving others. So, a passion to serve along with his athletic abilities and adrenaline fueled lifestyle, led him to pursue a career in the fire service. He was hired on to the Knoxville Fire Department in 2010 and still serves his community 7 years later. He is currently a Senior Firefighter and hopes to retire with this wonderful department.

He is constantly looking for ways to test his physical and mental abilities. When he was approached about the Pedal for Pat event, his first thought was that it was a crazy idea. But only after a few seconds of thinking about it, he was hooked. What a challenge…1098 miles over 12 days!!! What an awesome way to test his toughness, help him grow as an individual, build relationships on the way and support a wonderful cause in his local community. Coach Summit was always an inspiration to Rusty as well as many others.

Rusty feels fortunate to be a part of this amazing event and he is excited to be able to help out such a worthy cause. Let's use Coach Summit as an example of how we can come together from so many backgrounds for a larger, common goal. GBO & Support the PSF!!!

Together We Will Win!
